What is it about?
A model was developed to predict when the flow over surfaces moving at four times the speed of sound or more becomes unstable or turbulent by analyzing many airflow simulations. It was observed that air viscosity and the speed of sound are key factors in predicting transition. Using this insight, a machine learning model was developed that estimates when the flow is unstable. The model matches well with experimental data and has the potential to help engineers design better high-speed vehicles by improving airflow predictions.
