What is it about?

A microphone phased array is used to determine the sources of loud noise generated during the launch of Northrop Grumann's Antares rocket. The noise sources changed from the hold down to liftoff to 200ft above the launch pad. This is the duration when the payload tucked inside the fairing experienced the most intense vibration due to the loud noise. To reduce the level of vibration the launchpad uses large volume of water to cool the rocket plume. The phased array was able to determine the effectiveness of this sound suppression system and pointed future places of improvements.
