What is it about?
The radiation environment in deep space is extremely dangerous to astronaut health. This paper describes a unique design of an expandable magnetic shield that fully exploits the superposition of magnetic fields to create a concentrated shell of magnetic energy around the spacecraft, while minimizing the amount of superconducting material needed. The parameter space we explore can be used to predict the efficacy of any size or energy of magnetic shield.
