Folding Approaches for Tensioned Precision Planar Shell Structures

What is it about?

Large precision spacecraft structures are used to support space-based communications antennas and Earth sensing optical apertures. We present three origami-based folding approaches for design of such space structures. High volume efficiency was demonstrated, and a double-layer material hinge method was developed to achieve precision.
