What is it about?
Structural Health Monitoring systems using a network of sensors integrated with aircraft skin is used on-demand to check for any damage such as cracks occurring in aircraft during usage. This paper provides an example of installation on one of the inspection areas that have been chemically-milled and are subject to crack detection.

Why is it important?
Early detection of cracks in aircraft can help improve safety. Built-in sensors reduce the time taken to inspect the areas without any structural disassembly thereby minimizing aircraft downtime.
