What is it about?

This paper researches the interaction between a propeller and flap. A unsteady RANS simulation is performed and 3D flow field visualisations are shown to investigate flow behaviour.

Why is it important?

Our findings show the complex flow behaviour around the whole geometry and flap in particular. The flow field of the flap is dominated by the flow originating from the pressure side of the main element. The results reveal 2 areas of separated flow on the flap, within the propeller slipstream affected area. This is further investigated in detail.

Perspectives

This article shows the detail that a unsteady RANS simulation is able to solve. The single simulation took a month to solve on a HPC cluster and the database can be used for further research at TU Delft.
