What is it about?

This research investigates the integration of two airspace services, one which provides strategic scheduling and one which provides tactical separation, for urban air mobility operations. The approach we take is to integrate these services into a common simulation environment and simulate different scenarios of high-density operations to stress test the system and see under what conditions we observe safety incidents such as losses of separation between aircraft.

Why is it important?

A key distinguishing feature of UAM is that whereas traditional aviation currently relies on human involvement for air traffic control and air navigation services provision, UAM is expected to rely heavily on automation. This research is a step towards development and integration of two of the many airspace services that will eventually work together to support autonomous UAM operations.
