What is it about?

Dynamic soaring is the process of acquiring energy available in atmosphere vertical wind gradients and is commonly exhibited by soaring birds. Dynamic soaring maneuvers have been investigated in the past for formulating optimized trajectories for powered / unpowered aerial vehicles having fixed platform configuration. In this study, Effect of morphing in terms of variations in wing sweep was investigated to evaluate the extent to which it influences the energy gain acquired from atmosphere wind shear through dynamic soaring

Why is it important?

Dynamic soaring maneuvers have been investigated in the past for formulating optimized trajectories for powered / unpowered aerial vehicles having fixed platform configuration. But have never been investigated for a morphing platform

Perspectives

Effect of morphing in terms of variations in wing sweep was investigated to evaluate the extent to which it influences the energy gain acquired from atmosphere wind shear through dynamic soaring. The preliminary results of a case study for a morphing capable platform capable to vary its span strongly supports the idea of integrating dynamic soaring under morphing conditions and its potential benefits.
