Why is it important?
Extending crew stay can be applied early on for the Moon and Mars. By so doing, not only are mission cost and crew reduced but it would establish permanent bases leading to early settlement.
Perspectives
I believe that we are within reach of establishing humanity's first off-Earth settlements starting with small but largely Earth mass independent bases. Extending crew stay would accelerate this process. Doing so would be as historically significant as Christopher Columbus, Plymouth Rock, etc.
