What is it about?

We develop an algorithm to determine the heat flux from distributed temperature sensors that includes the contribution of insulation and coating in three-dimensional steel articles. The large ratio in thermal conductivity between the metal and the insulation creates three-dimensional pathways for the heat flow. We show how the complex underlying thermal field affects the heat flux in hypersonic wind-tunnel tests.
