What is it about?
Oscillations originating in the airframe due to control surface freeplay have been an active topic of research in the last decades. However, several questions are still open due to the complex nature of the phenomena. Most notably, experimental models to study these effects were made with simplified assumptions typical of a laboratory-scale experiment. Being a strongly nonlinear phenomena, it is possible that some important effects are missed out with these simplifications. In this joint effort between Politecnico di Milano and University of Washington, new realistic models are built to explore these oscillations in a more realistic setting.
