What is it about?

Mode transition is essential for the combined-cycle engine inlet. During actual inlet operation, mode transition may occur in the off-design state. However, the inlet dynamic characteristics have rarely been studied in this case. Therefore, our manuscript presents an experimental study of the dynamic characteristics of an over-under combined-cycle engine inlet during mode transition at an incoming Mach number of 2.9, while the designed transition Mach number is 3.5. The experimental results provide some new insights into the mode transition, such as two dominant oscillation flow patterns, the unstart/restart hysteresis loop during the process.
