What is it about?
Airworthiness certification for bird-strike resistance must be substantiated must be substantiated by aircraft engine full scale testing. Current studies capturing the effect of bird strike on aero-engines are mostly limited to a single blade or multiple blades. This paper developed a predictive modeling method for numerical analysis of the full extent of bird-strike damage in turbofan engines in order to evaluate the airworthiness and crashworthiness of engines before they are allowed for operational use. The proposed approach can be capable of capturing the effect of bird strike on rotating blades as well as the possibility of multiple blade failure and subsequent oscillation response of the first-stage rotor, generating unbalanced loading transferred towards the supporting and mounting components.
