What is it about?

A new approach to the mitigation of aerodynamic gust using a decomposition of the aerodynamic lift distribution in terms of "modes". When combined with a modern Unknow Input Observer yields a physically realizable controller using on board sensors and conventional actuators.

Why is it important?

Effective Gust Alleviation is import for structural load control, wing root moment mitigation and concomitant fatigue and passenger comfort in commercial air transport.

Perspectives

Gust alleviation has plagued the aircraft industry for decades. This was primarily due to the new for advanced and expensive sensor such as wind doppler lidar and high displacement, high bandwidth flap actuation. This approach is effective and requires none of the above. It represents 8 years of research and experimentation yielding a new approach and perspective to this important problem.
