What is it about?

Fractals are objects that repeat themselves at smaller and smaller scales. The pressure perturbations in the combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine have a fractal nature. The distribution of fractals in the combustion chamber gives an indication of the nature of combustion Instability in it. We show that this distribution can predict onset of instability for some propellant combinations in actual liquid engines. This is useful for actively controlling instability before, or slightly after, the fact.

Why is it important?

This is a unique study of fractal characteristics of full scale liquid rocket engines. Extant literature deals with at most subscale engines. This study will be useful in the design of shutdown systems and control systems of real engines that have a tendency to be unstable. This will prevent failure and hence costly time and budget overruns in critical projects.

Perspectives

In the course of this work, novel metrics were created to anticipate unstable combustion oscillations. These didn't exist in the extant literature and are a innovative contribution.
