What is it about?

Long term quality of life outcomes after sinus surgery are important indicators of the success or failure of managing chronic sinus swelling. This study compares different types of chronic sinus disease to see how the patients progress after endoscopic sinus surgery. It shows that the patients who react to airborne fungus appear to get the most benefit from the impact of the surgery in helping to control their sinuses.

Why is it important?

Patients whose sinuses react to airborne fungus are usually the hardest cases to deal with, however this study shows that they definitely get a positive impact from extensive sinus surgery which enables medication to better reach their sinuses after surgery.

Perspectives

The management strategy for patients with fungal sinus disease should include meticulous endoscopic sinus surgery (not just a polypectomy) alongside carefully sustained post-operative steroid medication into the nose.
