The numerical approach to calculate the total heave of shallow foundations for structures constructed in swelling soil. The influence of the load transmitted by the foundation in the total heave is focused.

Why is it important?
The estimation of the heave of the shallow foundations resulting from soil swelling is necessary to reduce the resulting damage. Due to the complex behavior of the swelling soil during the change in moisture content and its influence by many factors, a simple analytical approach based on the soil stress state and the swelling pressure is proposed.
Perspectives
This work focused on a simplified method of modeling soil swelling. A numerical model that takes into account the variation in moisture content during the humidification season can be considered.
