What is it about?

This work examined the livelihood activities of farmers in a setting where non-farm activities are growing and compromising precious resources such as land. Notwithstanding the dominance of agriculture, the study identified non-farm livelihood options of rural people and linked such diversification to one of the critical livelihood outcome, food security issue. Food security situation of households depends on their livelihood activities. Livelihood strategies influence important dimensions of food security: access, availability, stability, and utilization. Diverse livelihood options increase entitlements to food.

Why is it important?

Livelihood approach to food security is among the important transitions in food security studies. Succeeding food availability and income approach to food security analysis, the livelihood approach offers a broad understanding of food security as one of the livelihood outcomes than simply a basic need. This study is important for it is based on the subjective understanding of participants about their food entitlement security than objective threshold against which food security of households is often determined by nutritionists.

Perspectives

I am pleased to publish this article which I believe could help readers design more research topics on food security study. People might think that this article is simply about livelihood activities. However, this work is beyond simple appreciation of livelihood framework. It applies the concepts of livelihood framework to the analysis of food security.
