Why is it important?
The two World Wars in the Twentieth Century were vehicles for major social and cultural change. Christian Churches are important voluntary agencies in local communities. This study focuses on a smaller Evangelical denomination that has a larger influence that its relatively small numbers would suggest in Scotland.
Perspectives
In the past the focus in the era of the two World Wars was on the big battles and numbers killed -in essence the bigger picture in the war zone. In more recent decades greater attention has been paid by researchers to the home front to look at how communities responded to the challenges of the war years. Local responses by individuals or by larger groups such as churches & societies enable us to gain a fuller picture of the war years.
