What is it about?
We have researched native Korean honeybees Apis cerana koreana and found that they differ from neighbour Japanese Apis cerana japonica and Chinese Apis cerana cerana populations based on analysis of mitochondrial genome, gene Vitellogenin, Elongation factor EF-1a and morphology characteristics.

Why is it important?
The taxonomic designation of Apis cerana koreana will allow to preserve native korean bees gene pool from hybridization with introduced to Korea bees from another Asian countries. Protection of Apis cerana koreana can preserve the biodiversity of other Korean animals and plants.
Perspectives
The taxonomic designation of Korean bees will allow to include Apis cerana koreana to the list of Korean endangered animals and will allow create strategy for preserving the native korean bees gene pool in National Reserves and Isolates on Islands.
