What is it about?
The mentality of Reformation played a key role in developing the intellectual horizon behind the government of Central European cities. Education was one of the most important fields for town councils of Lutheran confession. The example of the Hungarian royal free city of Sopron shows how this manifested in practice by the establishing and maintaining of a new educational institution called lycée.

Why is it important?
The confessional-patriotic mentality of the lycée continued well into the 19th century, even after the town council had lost its supervision of the educational institution.
Perspectives
I hope this article will make scholars realize, that Lutheran reformation played a key role in the development of early-modern Central-European towns. The confessional-patriotic mentality influenced by the Reformation, the reason of the city and broader territorial and pre-modern national commitments played an important role during the entire early-modern age, and its continued existence can be proved beyond this period as well. This could open up some new perspectives for researchers of confessionalization, city-politics and historical mentalities, too.
