What is it about?
It is reported for the first time in Mexico, the application of aged refuse (AR) for treatment of landfill leachate. The bioreactor filled with AR removed 80% of COD and color in type II leachates, this was achieved when the system was operated with a hydraulic load of 18 L/m3-d.

Why is it important?
The study points out potential of AR in the removal of pollutants from landfill leachates. These results promote the revaluation of mature waste in landfills.
Perspectives
The microbiological potential present in the stabilized materials (aged refuse) opens the door to investigate with other types of wastewater.
