This book review critically discusses Jonathan Jansen’s 2017 book, As By Fire: The End of the South African University. Jansen reflects on recent events in South African higher education and considers whether the trajectory suggested by these events signals the end of the “university” in South Africa.

Why is it important?

Afropessimism is a popular perspective. Many are happy to see post-liberation HE fail in South Africa. Jansen’s central thesis, that the SA university has become a site of welfare rather than education, is interesting and valid within certain parameters, but by no means as pervasive or da mining as he proposes.
