What is it about?

This study examines how the “Indonesia Gemilang” program helps empower people in Cilembu Village, Sumedang Regency. The program is run by LAZ Al-Azhar and aims to reduce poverty by helping communities develop skills, manage local resources, and improve their economic conditions. The research shows that the program has helped villagers become more confident and independent, especially in managing agriculture and small businesses based on local products such as Ubi Cilembu (sweet potatoes). Training and mentoring have improved skills, product quality, and awareness of market opportunities. As a result, many community members have experienced better income stability and stronger motivation to work together. However, the study also finds that the community still has limited control over important decisions. Many key choices about planning and resource use are made by external organizers, which can limit long-term independence. In addition, access to wider markets remains a challenge, making it harder for villagers to expand their businesses. Overall, this research highlights that community empowerment programs can be effective when they focus not only on skills and funding, but also on local leadership and decision-making. Strengthening community involvement and improving market access can help ensure that these programs create lasting benefits and reduce poverty in rural areas.

Why is it important?

This study is unique because it examines a faith-based community empowerment program at the village level, showing how zakat funds are used not only for short-term assistance but also for long-term economic development. Unlike many studies that focus on national poverty programs or urban settings, this research provides detailed evidence from a rural village, where poverty reduction efforts often face greater challenges. The study is especially timely as Indonesia continues to strengthen its approach to poverty reduction and community-based development. At the same time, there is growing public interest in how zakat and other social funds can be managed more transparently and effectively to create sustainable livelihoods rather than temporary support. This research responds directly to that need by evaluating real outcomes at the community level. This work can make a difference by offering practical lessons for policymakers, zakat institutions, and development practitioners. It highlights the importance of mentoring, local participation, and access to markets in ensuring that empowerment programs have lasting impact. By showing both the strengths and the limitations of the program, the study helps improve future community empowerment initiatives and encourages better use of social funds to reduce rural poverty.

Perspectives

For me, this publication represents an effort to understand how community empowerment works at the grassroots level, beyond program designs and official reports. During this research, I observed how zakat-based initiatives can create meaningful change when they focus on people’s skills, confidence, and local potential, rather than only providing financial assistance. What stood out most to me was the strong motivation of community members in Cilembu Village to improve their livelihoods, despite facing limitations in decision-making power and market access. This experience reinforced my belief that true empowerment requires not only training and funding, but also trust in communities to take greater control over their own development. Personally, I hope this study encourages zakat institutions, policymakers, and development practitioners to listen more closely to community voices and to design programs that strengthen local leadership. I also hope this work inspires further research on faith-based and community-driven development models, especially in rural areas where such approaches can make a lasting difference.
