What is it about?

This was a retrospective study on the use of RiaSTAP or Human Fibrinogen Concentrate (HFC) in pediatric cardiac surgery patients. Our study suggest that the use of HFC reduces the needs for transfusion with cryoprecipitate and fresh frozen plasma.

Why is it important?

Reducing blood loss and transfusion requirements are important goals in pediatric cardiac surgery. We believe RiaSTAP can help to achieve this goal.

Perspectives

We use RiaSTAP now routinely in our pediatric cardiac operating room. It is as effective as cryoprecipitate for fibrinogen supplementation, with a much, much lower risk of blood borne infections and cryoprecipitate-induced hypoglycemia.
