What is it about?

Big Data” or its related cousin “Data Science” are now the title of new programs proliferating on university campuses. Most definitions of Big Data refer to the three Vs (Velocity, Volume and Variability). Such a definition only provides a global perspective. In this paper, we propose a definition of “Big Data” that is much closer to the algorithmic perspective and discuss its ramifications on computer science curricula as well as industry trends.

Why is it important?

This position paper proposes to address two questions. First, is “Big Data” for real? That is, is this a genuinely new discipline within computing that will persist, or will it deteriorate much like object oriented databases? We posit this is a new, legitimate discipline within Computer Science. Second, given out affirmative answer to the first question, what are the ramifications for future computer science research and instruction.

Perspectives

The analysis of Big Data deals with non-homogeneous data distribution and data management across thousands of nodes with numerous distributed computers. This also employs new algorithms to distribute data easily. Hence, it is paramount that the next generation of data scientists be equipped with tools and techniques that greatly exceed those that are presented in a typical computer science curriculum.
