What is it about?
In this article, we analyse how smart technologies those that combine hardware, software, and communications to adapt and generate useful information for decision making are being used and studied. To do this, we systematically mapped 367 scientific publications, identifying the main trends, areas of research, and types of technologies that predominate in the literature. With these results, we show not only the advances that have been made, but also the gaps and opportunities that still exist for further developing this rapidly growing field.

Why is it important?
This research is important because it offers a broad and structured view of a rapidly growing emerging topic: smart technologies. Its distinctive approach is not limited to describing specific applications, but rather to mapping research areas globally, identifying conceptual gaps, and pointing out trends that guide future researchers. In doing so, it provides a key reference framework for understanding what has been achieved, what remains to be studied, and where this field is headed, offering unique value to those who design, apply, or research smart technologies.
Perspectives
Working with my colleagues to systematically map the literature allowed us to highlight not only what has been achieved, but also the gaps that remain and the exciting opportunities ahead. For me, the most valuable part was realising how fast this area is growing and how crucial it is to guide research in the right directions. I hope this work serves as a roadmap for others interested in shaping the future of smart technologies.
