Predicting Progression to Stage 3 Type 1 Diabetes with MRI and OGTT

What is it about?

In this prospective cohort study, pancreas volume, metabolic scores from oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT), and a combination of both were assessed to predict progression to stage 3 type 1 diabetes (T1D) in individuals with multiple diabetes-related autoantibodies. Pancreas volume and metabolic scores were significantly different between participants who progressed to stage 3 T1D and those who did not. PVI, a measure of pancreas volume adjusted for body weight, declined over time in individuals with stage 3 T1D. OGTT-derived scores, such as Index60 and DPTRS, were higher in progressors than non-progressors at study entry. A combination of PVI and DPTRS provided superior prediction of progression to stage 3 T1D compared to either measure alone. Overall, these findings suggest that measures of pancreas volume and metabolism reflect distinct components of risk for developing stage 3 T1D, and a combination of these measures may provide superior prediction than either alone.
