What is it about?

Bariatric surgeries have been suggested to elicit unique metabolic benefits independent of body weight loss. We compared the changes in insulin sensitivity, glucose disposal, fat tissue and inflammatory markers, as well liver content of fat in three groups of obese human subjects early after weight loss by either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), or caloric restriction. We identified similar improvements in metabolism and adipokine secretion in all three groups suggesting caloric restriction is a major factor involved in metabolic improvements, irrespective of intervention.
