What is it about?

The composition of gut microbiome has been previously linked to risk of type 2 diabetes. However, previous associations might have been compromised by effects of prevalent diabetes and diabetes medication, which are also known to affect the gut microbiome. We examined associations between the initial gut microbiome compositions and incident diabetes in a large Finnish cohort during almost 16 years of follow-up. The analysis identified four bacterial species which were predictive of incident type 2 diabetes. The gut microbiome can potentially be used to improve disease prediction and to uncover novel therapeutic targets for diabetes.
