What is it about?
We investigated the national and state-specific trends in diabetes-related hospital admissions between 2008-2017. We found that national all-cause and diabetes-specific hospitalizations declined by 3.1% (95% CI -5.5, -0.7) and 19.1% (95% CI -21.6, -16.6), respectively, between 2008-2017. However, trends varied significantly by state and demographic subgroups, for example, rural diabetes-specific hospitalizations decreased in around half of the included states (15.2-69.2% decrease). These state- and subpopulation-level differences highlight the need for state-level policies and interventions to address these disparities in diabetes healthcare use. The rise in diabetes hospitalizations among young adults is concerning.
