What is it about?
We show that circulating succinate, a metabolite previously described as a pathological inflammatory marker, has a meal-related response dependent on glucose sensing by the gastrointestinal tract. This response is blunted in patients with morbid obesity and type 2 diabetes and is recovered after weight loss.
