What is it about?
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent in children. NAFLD is the leading cause of liver diseases and it is strongly associated with cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. This study shows that a 22-week multidisciplinary intervention program including exercise training and lifestyle education reduces adiposity, insulin resistance and hepatic fat (nearly 20%), and improves dietary habits and psychological well-being in children with overweight/obesity.

Why is it important?
Given the importance of treating pediatric hepatic steatosis early - not only to prevent future liver damage but also type 2 diabetes - these findings should be taken into account in pediatric obesity management programs.
