What is it about?

The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) reportedly promotes adipogenesis and obesity triggered metabolic disease. Paradoxically, recent work demonstrated a beneficial role for TREM2 in metabolic heath, ascribing this to macrophage expressed TREM2. Here, although we confirm beneficial effects of TREM2 in metabolic disease, we demonstrate these are uncoupled from its expression on macrophages. Instead. our work suggests TREM2’s protective effects are linked to adipose tissue associated sphingolipid metabolism.
