Using a unique dataset of internal auditor survey responses from around the world, we find that the extent of operations-related services (ORS) provided by the internal audit function (IAF)has a significant positive association with firm operating performance. It is the first archival paper showing that internal auditing matters to operating performance. Findings in this paper extend the internal auditing literature by taking the initial move to demonstrate that the value of internal audit can go beyond financial reporting.
