What is it about?

The growing enthusiasm for (and overhyping of?) workplace mindfulness motivated us to investigate claims about the benefits of workplace mindfulness. Therefore, we documented the claims of accounting firms about mindfulness benefits and examined the evidence supporting these claimed benefits. Perspectives.

Why is it important?

Some of the claimed benefits of mindfulness, e.g., wellness and attentional focus, are well-supported. Others, e.g., improved leadership and team work, have little support in research. Finally, for several reasons, the claimed benefits of mindfulness may not always be realized in mindfulness interventions.

Perspectives

One of the authors (Stone) has been practicing and teaching mindfulness for many years. This paper helped sort out which of my beliefs about mindfulness are evidence-based versus speculations. Going forward, I have a clearer sense about which of the plausible but weakly supported claims about mindfulness that I want to investigate.
