What is it about?
In the perspective of a cultural anthropological approach it is legitimate to assume that art production is incorporated in the texture of the culture from which it originates. Thus Netherlandish painting is always to some extent an expression of the local culture of the Low Countries. In this article I show Netherlandish specific has specific characteristics that together identify it and differentiate it from surrounding artistic cultures. But I also indicate in how far Netherlandish painting is the result of a conscious construction process and of cultural cross-pollination.
