What is it about?

In the late fourth century the Christian ascetic Evagrius Ponticus exerted a striking influence on the development of spirituality, Origenism, and the spiritual interpretation of the Bible in Greek, Syriac, and Latin Christianity. This volume clarifies his ideas concerning reality, God, protology, eschatology, anthropology, and allegoresis of Scripture, which in Kephalaia Gnostika are expressed in a very dense and concise way.

Why is it important?

This book offers the first English translation of the most complete Syriac version of Evagrius’s Kephalaia Gnostika, revised with some autoptic corrections to Guillaumont's reading and interpretations. In addition, Ramelli in her monographic essay and full commentary provides an integrated analysis of Evagrius’s ascetic and philosophical writings, as well as a reappraisal of Evagrius and the coherence of his thought and a reassessment of his Christology, eschatology, and relationship with Gregory of Nyssa and Origen. A comprehensive, detailed commentary on the Kephalaia Gnostika not only situates this work in the Origenian tradition and within Evagrius’s oeuvre but also offers new interpretations of several kephalaia, casting new light on their meaning and theological implications.
