What is it about?
This is a joint article with Saya SHIRAISHI, presenting a Japanese police report on Sumatra we found in the Japanese military archives in 1973. The report constitutes the critical evidence about a wave of peasant demands of the new Japanese rulers for land. It was directly primarily against traditional rulers of Aceh and East Sumatra, and thus foreshadowed the 'social revolutions' there in 1945-6.
