What is it about?

This article offers a comprehensive and detailed explanation of what is really meant by the statement, "she shall be saved through childbearing" in 1 Timothy 2:11-15. The author shows why the statement does not mean what many have thought it meant. In order to truly understand the statement we must enter the world of Paul and Timothy where new discoveries await.

Why is it important?

The statement "she shall be saved through childbearing" in 1 Timothy 2:11-15 has been a source of confusion, personal anguish, abusive practice, and interpretive difficulty for generations upon generations. It has made 1 Timothy 2:11-15 one of the most difficult passages in the Bible and certainly the most difficult in the Pastoral Epistles. This article resolves the difficulties with an altogether new argument.

Perspectives

I presented the argument of this article at the International Society of Biblical Literature meeting in 2004 in Groningen, Netherlands, and I remain grateful for the reception the paper received in that setting. I am further grateful for the publication of this article in the Journal of Biblical Literature where I hope it will receive wider circulation. I think my argument stands on its own. I welcome further discussion and dialogue.
