What is it about?
Scholars suggest that social media (such as Facebook) alienate users. I explore the philosophical foundations of this argument. The paper maintains that there is a tendency to lapse into idealism when arguing along these lines. A materialist alternative is offered.

My paper is one of the first to set the analysis of social media on a firmer (materialist) philosophical footing.
Perspectives
I wrote this article in the hope that it will cause scholars to think twice before applying classical Marxian concepts to social media.
