What is it about?
In the fight against poverty, it is believed that the introduction of banks in rural areas enhances the livelihood of rural dwellers. This paper examined how Kakum Rural Bank, a rural bank, has contributed to reducing poverty in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality

Why is it important?
Our findings showed that rural banks with their financial (credit, capital formation, money transfers) and non-financial services (education and training, social responsibilities) have contributed to poverty reduction in the study area. Their operation is hence important in an attempt to reduce poverty, especially in rural areas. As such rural banks should expand their operations in the rural areas and also desist from establishing their agencies in the urban centres.
Perspectives
Undertaking this study was deemed important especially when you find rural banks springing up across the length and breadth of Ghana. It was an opportunity for us to also identify one way by which poverty could be reduced. Judging from the fact that poverty is a rural phenomenon, we decided to look critically at those institutions that are primarily set up to improve the lives of the rural people and settle on the rural banks. It is our hope that rural banks, governments, private agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders find the content of this article as one of the many ways by which the high incidence of poverty can be reduced especially in rural communities
