What is it about?

Green infrastructure or infrastructure based on nature is explained. Nature and people have been adapting to climatic changes through times. This work studies these natural processes and develops adaptation plans based on direct learning from the effectiveness of existing infrastructure. Applications of nature based approaches, how this complements engineering and planning are demonstrated from planning principles, engineering designs and building codes.

Why is it important?

Green infrastructure complements gray infrastructure and can play a significant role in offsetting losses from climate-related disasters and contribute to building resilience of people and their habitats. This can be through planned rehabilitation and expansion of natural ecosystems within built areas.

Perspectives

This work is evidence to demonstrate that workable solutions are those sought by leveraging experiences and building partnerships. The publication highlights the results of a successful partnership between ADB and the International Centre for Environmental Management (ICEM) with cofinancing from the Nordic Development Fund (NDF). ICEM’s demonstrated and widely tested expertise in climate adaptation and mitigation methodology provided the technical basis for the study. Cofinancing from the NDF provided the impetus for capacity building and knowledge sharing of international good practices.
