What is it about?
This study investigates whether replacing short-duration professional pilot training courses with undergraduate programs in Aeronautical Sciences can contribute to safer aviation. Based on evidence from learning sciences and neuroscience, the research shows that long-duration, structured education enables spaced learning, which leads to better long-term memory retention, improved decision-making, and enhanced problem-solving skills. In contrast, short and intensive courses may produce satisfactory short-term exam results but are associated with faster knowledge decay over time.

Why is it important?
Given aviation’s complexity and reliance on human judgment, the findings suggest that undergraduate Aeronautical Sciences programs can strengthen cognitive performance and support higher safety standards in professional aviation.
Perspectives
I hope this article will help the community to improve the aviator profession and increase aviation safety.
