What is it about?

The Karoo Meat of Origin certification scheme is one of the first certification schemes in South Africa to protect a meat product with a regional identity. This paper aims to understand why this certification scheme was developed and also highlights some of the challenges that the supply chain stakeholders still face despite the product being protected in the South African legal framework.

Why is it important?

This paper is written as a case study for undergraduate and postgraduate students in supply chain management, institutional economics, agribusiness management and marketing. The paper also serves as a point of departure for future research on possible ways to protect the geographical identity of products in developing countries outside common GI frameworks found in developed countries.

Perspectives

After spending three memorable months collecting data in the picturesque Karoo region it was a great pleasure to share parts of this region, and its people, in this paper.
