What is it about?

Small and medium-sized enterprises depend on knowledge, relationships and internal routines to compete and create value. This study examines whether these elements are present in two Brazilian companies, one small and one medium-sized. The article focuses on three parts of intellectual capital. Human capital refers to the knowledge, skills and experience of people. Relational capital refers to relationships with customers, suppliers and other partners. Structural capital refers to processes, systems and organizational routines that remain in the company. The study finds that all three elements are present in the companies analyzed. It also shows that managers recognize the value of intellectual capital, but they still lack tools and reports to measure how these intangible assets contribute to business value and decision-making.

Why is it important?

This work is relevant because many small and medium-sized enterprises create value through knowledge, relationships and internal organization, but these assets are often difficult to measure. The article helps managers and researchers understand that intellectual capital is present even in smaller firms, although it may remain informal and poorly measured. The findings can support better management reports, investment decisions and strategies for strengthening people, relationships and organizational routines. The study also contributes to research by examining intellectual capital in small and medium-sized enterprises, a context that receives less attention than large corporations.

Perspectives

This publication reflects my interest in how small and medium-sized enterprises create value through intangible resources. The article shows that managers understand the relevance of knowledge, relationships and organizational routines, but still need practical instruments to measure and manage these elements. This perspective can help bring intellectual capital closer to the daily reality of smaller firms, where many strategic resources exist outside traditional accounting measures.
