What is it about?

PtAu/chitosan nanocomposites were synthesized to encapsulate high amounts of DOX. The encapsulation efficiency, drug release, anticancer activity and cellular uptake are discussed.

Why is it important?

The nanoparticles synthesized were able to encapsulate high amounts of DOX, elicit controlled release under acidic conditions for selective cancer targeting and induce dose-dependent cancer-specific cell death through the induction of apoptosis. These nanoparticles show immense potential for enhancing therapeutic effects due to prolonged release, with chitosan containing nanocomposites exhibiting strong binding to model porcine mucin, advancing to the possibility of drug administration through the mucosal tissue.

Perspectives

This article was the hard work of the first author and my masters student. The synthesized chitosan polymerized nanoparticles appear to be safe excipients for controlled drug delivery strategies, and we hope to take this further in aminal models.
