What is it about?
Adoptive cell therapy is a method for harnessing the immune system to fight cancer. Immune cells called lymphocytes are obtained from a patients tumor and grown in the lab in conditions that invigorate them. These cells are then returned to the patient to treat the cancer. This article reviews the data on this treatment method, discusses open questions and dillemas regarding it and future directions for such treatments including genetic engineering of lymphocytes.
