What is it about?

Unnecessary preoperative ordering and preparation of blood and blood products not only results in wastage of a valuable life-saving resource, it poses a significant financial burden on health care systems. The results of our study indicate that the existing MSBOS for pancreatic surgery suffers from the lack of uniform applicability owing to the number of issues including surgical volume, type of procedure, etc. Using the factors determined in our study to affect the need for transfusions may help optimize MSBOS protocols in centres performing PD thereby leading to a more judicious use of blood products.
