What is it about?

KPC – producing Klebsiella pneumoniae is a multi-drug resistant microorganism that represents a global public threat. It can cause infections in the patients that are almost untreatable with most or all antibiotics that are currently in use. In this article we have shown the maseures we undertook to put the outbreak with this bacteria under control.

Why is it important?

In this article we have shown that a good and timely collaboration with the microbiology lab, the affected wards in the hospital, together with National Committee for Infection Control at the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Intersectorial Coordination Mechanism for AMR Control (ISKRA) that coordinates all the activities related to AMR control was successful in the management of the first KPC-producing K. pneumoniae outbreak in Croatia, that occurred in the General Hospital Zabok.

Perspectives

Although many articles have been written on the similar topics, here we have shown that we were prepared and ready to deal with a multi-drug resistant microorganism that represents a global public threat in the times where many countries have already lost or are losing a battle against it. I hope this article might be helpful to some countries / hospitals that might encounter the similar problem for the first time.
